Wind Energy

Platte River took ownership of all assets at the Medicine Bow Wind Project site, located southeast of Medicine Bow, Wyoming, and began delivering wind energy to Fort Collins Utilities for its Wind Power Pilot Program in the spring of 1998. In the fall of 1999 and the summer of 2000, additional turbines were built as Estes Park Light & Power, Longmont Power & Communications and Loveland Water and Power began receiving wind energy for their individual wind power programs. Two 600 kW and seven 660 kW Vestas wind turbines currently generate energy at the site. In 2005, Platte River leased land to Clipper Windpower for a 2.5 MW prototype turbine, the Liberty I. All energy generated by the Liberty I is purchased by Platte River.

In the fall of 2009, the Silver Sage Wind Site, owned and operated by Duke Energy, was put into commercial operation. Platte River contracts for 12 MW of wind energy generated at Silver Sage, located approximately 12 miles west of Cheyenne, Wyoming.
